Common Questions - Alma Via Counseling

Therapy and/or life mentoring can have a number of benefits. Therapists provide support, help clients learn more effective coping skills and problem-solving skills, and assist clients in changing old behavior patterns and learn new behaviors. Therapists can often provide a new perspective on issues that clients are facing. Clients often learn more about themselves through the therapy process, which leads to a better understanding about themselves, their values, and goals. This can often lead to improved relationships and communication with others.

You can either send us an email, fill out the form on the website, or call to initiate services. When you contact us, provide a brief explanation for why you are seeking counseling. Doing so determines if you and our therapists would be the best fit for your needs.

The first appointment is the assessment session. The necessary paperwork will be discussed and completed (Client Intake Form, Informed Consent, Patient Financial Policy, Privacy Policy). Then the therapist will begin asking questions about what is bringing you into counseling. Questions will range from family/friends to school/career to health/mental health history. This is when you will explain in as much detail as possible why you are seeking counseling services. Sometimes the assessment will continue into the second session if there is still more information to gather. Toward the end of the assessment, the therapist will begin to ask you about goals that you’d like to work on in counseling together.

If you have Medical Mutual of Ohio, SummaCare, or Aetna insurance, be sure to bring your insurance card and driver’s license.

Yes, all sessions are confidential and we comply with all HIPPA laws on confidentiality. Any person seeking counseling services has the right of privileged communication, which means that your clinical information is confidential except as allowed by the laws of the State of Ohio. Confidential information will only be released after the client or guardian signs the appropriate “Release of Information” form.

However, state law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:
-Suspected past or present abuse or neglect of children, adults, elders, and pets/animals to the authorities, including Child Protection and law enforcement, based on information provided by the client or collateral sources.
-If the therapist has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.
