In individual counseling, you work one-on-one with your therapist to work on goals specific to you and your life. Your therapy is tailored to meet your specific needs. We believe that you, the client, are the expert of your life, and we are simply guiding you in these goals, teaching you new skills for you to utilize along your journey.

THERAPY DETAILS

When a client initiates therapy, the first appointment is called an assessment because we complete a full intake assessment to gather information about the client’s history and current situation to fully understand the client’s background. The client and therapist discuss why the client has requested therapy so that the therapist can understand what is troubling the client. This helps us work towards identifying the treatment plan that they will work on together. The therapist usually asks the client to identify three goals that he or she would like to work on in therapy, as it is the client, not therapist, that directs therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy and solution-focused therapy is usually the treatment approach that is used with clients seeking mental health therapy, and we explain why the treatment approach is the best for the particular client’s presenting problem.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based therapy that is the most widely-used treatment approach for anxiety, depression, and other concerns. CBT helps clients see the relationship between their beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Clients learn that their beliefs and perceptions influence their responses to situations. Through this process, clients learn to challenge and change their beliefs and thoughts.

In addition to CBT techniques, all three of our therapists use skills and techniques from other therapy methods, including solution-focused, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and systemic therapies.

Christina utilizes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for clients with a trauma history, whether that means a single traumatic event or multiple events. Additionally, EMDR can be utilized for events that were considered disturbing or difficult to cope with, including grief, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and other concerns.
